Elena Hoyos, a tuberculosis patient who was examined by Dr. Carl Tanzler, who later became obsessed with her. He paid for her funeral following her death on October 25, 1931, and commissioned a mausoleum for her.
The following April, he snuck into the mausoleum and stole the body. He attached the corpse’s bones together with wire, and fitted her body with glass eyes. As she decomposed, he wrapped her in silk cloth soaked in wax and plaster. He fashioned a wig out of hair given to him by her mother not long after her burial, and filled her chest cavity with rags to keep her shape.
He dressed her in her own clothing, and used lots of perfume, disinfectant and preserving agents on the corpse, keeping the body in his bed. It is also rumored that a paper tube was inserted into the vagina for intercourse, though no evidence besides the word from the original autopsy was found.
